A brief history of the Arlberg
The Arlberg massif has been the scene of several important firsts in skiing:
- In 1901, the first Arlberg Ski Club was founded.
- In 1904, the first Arlberg race took place.
- In 1921, Hannes Schneider opened the first ski school.
- In 1928, the first Arlberg Kandahar race was held.
- In 1937, the first lifts were built in St. Anton and Zürs.

Freeriding on more than 200km of deep-snow descents
A particular Arlberg highlight are the many backcountry slopes. You would have to go a long way to find another region with such a terrific range of ski tour and deep snow options. Many of these are accessible via ski lift, but others make you find your own way to the top. A special highlight is heli-skiing, which is only possible in the Arlberg region of Austria. Experienced ski and mountain guides accompany you safely into the untouched terrain.
Learn to ski on the Arlberg
With over 1,000 trained and proficient ski instructors, the Arlberg is just the right place for beginners as well. Even some of the instructor training facilities are located here. But the Arlberg Ski School also offers lessons for experienced skiers. You can learn to traverse deep snow or take a ski tour, try heli-skiing or discover the Telemark style.
