The Arlberg is considered the cradle of alpine skiing and is still one of the most modern and best ski resorts in the Alps today. With a huge selection of slopes, varied deep-snow runs and excellent infrastructure, the region remains a legendary destination for winter sports enthusiasts.

Ski Arlberg, Austria’s largest interconnected ski area

85 state-of-the-art cable-cars and lifts deliver the ultimate in safety and comfort. 305km of marked descents for all abilities, challenging sporting opportunities on 200km of deep-snow descents, snowboard fun parks, carving areas, permanent racetracks and plenty of comfortable and convenient venues for an enjoyable change of scene.

The Arlberg is an enormous, unique ski paradise that grows a little more cohesive each year.

Ski link from St. Anton to Lech

Since the 2016/17 winter season, St. Anton and Lech Zürs have been linked by ski lifts. This is made possible by the Flexenbahn. It runs from Alpe Rauz near Stuben towards Zürs in around 6 minutes, climbing 562 metres in altitude. From the panoramic windows of the cabins, you can see across the Klostertal valley and towards the Arlberg Pass. The connection is complemented by the new Trittkopfbahn and the extended Albonabahn in Stuben. Where around 120 bus journeys were once required every day, you can now cross over comfortably on skis. Thanks to this connection, Ski Arlberg is Austria’s largest contiguous ski area. From Zürs, you can also reach the Weißer Ring, which, at 22 km, is one of the longest ski circuits in the world.

Connection to the Sonnenkopf ski area in Klösterle

The Sonnenkopf ski area in Klösterle in the Klostertal valley offers around 30 kilometres of slopes and 8 lifts. It is a family-friendly ski area and one of the few that operates exclusively on natural snow. The 8-seater gondola lift takes you from the valley station at 1,840 m; the highest point is on the Glattingrat at 2,300 m. As well as gentle family runs and practice slopes, there is also a speed run and a mogul run. The Ski Arlberg ski pass is also valid here. You can reach Klösterle from the Ski Arlberg ski resort by taking the ski bus from Stuben.

At 2,809 metres, the Valluga is the highest peak in the Arlberg region. It lies on the border between Tyrol and Vorarlberg. On clear days, the view from the summit viewing platform stretches across five countries, taking in the Lechtal Alps, the Verwall Mountains and many other peaks. The ascent begins in St. Anton with the Galzigbahn. From the mountain station, the Vallugabahn I takes you through the Steißbach Valley, followed by a two-minute ride on the Vallugabahn II to the summit. The Valluga is therefore a popular destination for skiers and winter walkers.

A brief history of the Arlberg

The Arlberg massif has been the scene of several important firsts in skiing:

• In 1901, the first Arlberg Ski Club was founded.
• In 1904, the first Arlberg race took place.
• In 1921, Hannes Schneider opened the first ski school.
• In 1928, the first Arlberg Kandahar race was held.
• In 1937, the first lifts were built in St. Anton and Zürs.

Why here? It's quite simple. The Arlberg is the perfect place for skiing. Guaranteed snow, ideal slopes and excellent infrastructure make the region the centre of winter sports.

Freeriding on more than 200km of deep-snow descents

A particular Arlberg highlight are the many backcountry slopes. You would have to go a long way to find another region with such a terrific range of ski tour and deep snow options. Many of these are accessible via ski lift, but others make you find your own way to the top. A special highlight is heli-skiing, which is only possible in the Arlberg region of Austria. Experienced ski and mountain guides accompany you safely into the untouched terrain.
